To speak of Carmen Cordera is to journey into the past and the future of design in Mexico.
She has a degree in Industrial Design from the Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico City Campus, 1978). She studied Design Methodology at the Escuela Elisava de Barcelona (1981).
In 1979 she began her career as director of Drafft Diseñadores Asociados S.C., a graphic design, visual communication, and editorial management company. Among its clients one can find brands like Kelloggs, Interceramic, Helvex, Banamex, Banpais, Kingswood, Patricia Quintana, and Kepler Constructora.
In 1990 she founded the Galería Mexicana de Diseño (GMD); a forum dedicated to presenting and commercializing Mexican and international design proposals in all areas: industrial, handicraft, textiles, jewelry, environmental, graphic and interior design. Since it was founded, the GMD has presented more than 150 exhibitions, with the participation of more than 700 designers and artists, and 85 brands from 14 countries.
Founding partner of Quorum, Consejo de Diseñadores de Méxco A.C., an association of companies dedicated to the dissemination of design in Mexico, of which she was president from 1995 to 1997.
In 2007, she was coauthor of the Vida y Diseño en México book from Fomento Cultural Banamex.
She has lectured and curated design exhibitions in the United States, Europe and Mexico, working with institutions such as ISCID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design), Icograda (International Council of Graphic Design Associations), IIDA (International Interior Design Association), the Museo Franz Mayer, the British Council and the ministries of culture of Holland and Finland.
In 2010, the book 20 Años de Diseño en Mexico is presented; it was published by ARQUINE editorial along with an exhibition dedicated to the Gallery's 20 years of life. At that same event a new line of products was presented: 20/20 Visión perfecta. 20 designers with great experience and 20 emerging talents created these products.
Nowadays, Carmen Cordera runs her own consulting firm, which dedicates itself to interior design, curatorship, product design and visual communication.
A comprehensive, innovative, artistic and commercial vision have kept Carmen as a major influence in the design field in Mexico, under the premise that design is a determining factor for society's development.
